First you want to read the FAQ's which can be found here:
<http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1232.html>
Second:
If you are really a total newbie, take my advice and stick with your
Working XDarwin, OrobourOSX configuration. Unless you are willing to
learn X11 then switch to Apple's X11 beta. XDarwin nearly works out of
the box and this is what Apples's X11 won't. First thing is lack of
international keyboards support, nevermind it, if you are american
nativ, otherwise this is the first barrier you have to take. I wrote a
short setup guide in the MacOSX Beta Testing Forum at www.ooodocs.org.
Be aware this guide sometimes works, sometimes not.
Next is the right configuration of your .xinit and other configuration
files which you have to place in your home directory in order to set
the right enviroment for the X11 applications. This is kind of
difficult and I had to ask some questions here on this list on how to
do it and read a couple of man pages.
Next is to get the Apps working like they should. In my case I wasn't
able to launch Xman and after I could launch it it didn't find any man
pages althoug I was able to get any man page by typing man <application
you like> from the command line.
So far these are my experiences with Apple's X11 and needn't be the
ones of others here in the mailinglist but have a look at the archives
of this list. They are avaible here:
http://www.lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/x11-users
At the end of the page the username and password are mentioned, so read
the page down to the end :)
Postiv was I learned a lot about Keymaps, X enviroment settings and now
I'm able to slowly begin setting up my X enviroment while using XFree
4.3 RC1. Without Apple's X11 I wouldn't have learned that much that
quick.
It's up to you to make a decesion. For me I can say Apple's X11 was an
interesting experience and maybe I will give it another try when it's
done. Up to then I stick with XFree86 aka XDarwin and their more common
standards following behaviour.
Wait. Just notice that Version 0.2 of Apple's X11 is out. Maybe with
this one some probles are solved. So be aware to download the latest
X11 by Apple. The 02 seems to be up for only a few hours or so. Today
afternoon (Europen Standard Time) there was still the old 0.1 and yes I
pressed F5 to reload the page.
Regards
Eric
