fonts in X11 apps

I would like any advice someone may have about fonts in X11. I have used fink to install openoffice and abiword, but I can't seem to get reasonable font rendering/smoothing. This is the same problem I always had in unix/linux GUIs and why I came back to the Mac OS in the end. Am I missing some way to increase the onscreen resolution of the fonts to make them appear smoother?

Also, I have started booting OS X in verbose mode - does anyone know what font that apple is using to display the startup/init process? It looks alot better than the Terminal Monaco in my opinion . . .

Thanks for the help,

c
