gtk is a common toolkit used by many current X11 applications. I don't
know if OpenOffice uses it, though. There should be no reason to install
GIMP unless you want to run GIMP. (They might be getting confused between
GIMP and gtk, since gtk is sort of part of the GIMP project, but is used
for lots of other things too.)
Basically, gtk is to X11 as Aqua is to Quartz.
