This happens in Terminal.app as well. It happens to me frequently

not 4 me:

[wiblesIbook:~] tomw% aaa&
[1] 1299
[wiblesIbook:~] tomw% aaa: Command not found.
<no further output until a cr is issued>
[1]    Exit 1                        aaa
[wiblesIbook:~] tomw%
