David,
The solution that I came across was:
Start Xterm
cd /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/program
sh soffice
The directions displayed during the openoffice install say that you need
to set the two variables DISPLAY and DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH. Putting the
path /usr/X11R6/lib at the end of the DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH finds an
incompatible libGL.dylib.
I still have not had luck with the StartOpenOffice.org script (even the
newest).
HTH,
Greg

I have the same symptoms as Greg Gent, with OpenOffice 1.0.1 crashing on open. I am currently using
MacOS X 10.2.4 and Apple's X11 .2 Beta (2/12/2003 build). I WAS able to launch OpenOffice when I ran
Mac OS X 10.2.3.
There is a viable workaround for opening OpenOffice it in 10.2.4 - use OroborOSX/XDarwin instead of
Apple's X11 beta. OroborOSX v0.8 beta just gives a warning in stderr/stdout output: the "Could not
load symbol glFlush" message, then continues to open the application. At least this works well for
me (1GHz PowerBookG4, 1GB RAM).
