I don't see anyone mentioning "xhost" in this discussion. When I
regularly used X11 between machines, one had to authorize the use of
one machine from another, which is what xhost does.
On machineA execute "xhost +machineB" where 'machineB' is the name
you're using to connect to machineB.
Or, if you're willing to allow any machine on the network to use
machineA for displays, just type "xhost +"
The following commands may also be useful: "man xhost" "man xauth" .

Thanks for your comments, however I have so far been led to believe
that these commands are for use when not tunneling X applications via
ssh (using the ssh -X command)
If this is not the case I would be very happy to give this a try.
--anyone know for sure?
PS -I have had X application forwarding working well using the xhost +
$hostname method. We really need the security of ssh though so thats
why we are investigating this option.
