Anyone else out there using Grace (interactive graph drawing)?
I'd like to compare notes if so before filing any bug reports.
(Or hear if anyone has seen similar with other apps.)
I'm running Grace 5.1.10-1 installed via fink.
Basically, on top of the known docking funnies, Grace doesn't seem to play
nicely with the dock. At the moment this is the only way to "hide or
minimise" an X app, but maybe the fix is in the works to provide other
ways to do this.
Grace opens a main window with a blank graph in it and pull down menus.
Choose a menu item to import some data and another window opens in
which you pick files, select whether to autoscale, etc.. Then you might
select another menu item to configure the axes, and another to choose
colours or symbols for your data points, each one opening another window.
Most of these windows stay around until you choose to close them because
you might use them repeatedly as you refine your graph. Oops, new mail,
where's the mail window gone...lets just hide all the Grace stuff and come
back to it later.
Under fvwm2 (and as far as I recall, other window managers too) only the
main window gets a minimise button and clicking it puts all the other
windows away too behind the same icon. Under quartz-wm all these child
windows have the same three usual kill-dock-max buttons (only max doesn't
work), and all the windows have to be docked individually. This might
well be a feature rather than a bug, but while you could reasonably want
to dock child windows with the main window still open, I can't think why
you'd want any of the child windows open if the main window was docked.
(I can think of other apps where this is not the case and you could want
any number of open/minimised window combos, but for Grace the whole thing
is that graph in the main window...)
OK, so now we need to undock the windows individually too. Pull the main
window back. See what happens if you forget you docked the axes window
and select it again from the menus. Now something happens that definitely
shouldn't. It reappears but the dock still says it is sitting in the
dock. Is this part of the known docking funnies? From then on it gets
worse, you can't dock that incarnation of the window, and if you close it
using its own close button you get an undecorated version of it (no window
manager frame at all), and if you keep pushing things it'll get everything
except the X11 menus pretty wedged.
I'm not totally convinced this isn't mixed up with Grace's own odd
behaviour, though. For instance, you can't bring the main window in front
of any of the child windows (which would be useful...), but this behaviour
occurs in both fvwm2 and quartz-wm so I assume it is not a wm problem...
