I have these lines in one of my ".emacs" files. Maybe they (or
something like them) will
fix your problem.
;; Set up the keyboard so the delete key on both the regular keyboard
;; and the keypad delete the character under the cursor and to the right
;; under X, instead of the default, backspace behavior.
(global-set-key [delete] 'delete-char)
(global-set-key [kp-delete] 'delete-char)

I meant to say the Delete Key, not the Backspace Key.
Let me try again. . .
I can't figure out why the Delete key on my PowerBook works ok in
xterm (deletes the character before the cursor), but sends a > Control-H
and calls up the help in emacs.
Do I have to modify emacs to remap the Delete key to the Delete
command or
is the keycode itself wrong? Do I fix this in my xmodmap or emacs?
Also, how do I make the option key, act as the ESC (meta) key in emacs
(X11), it works in Apple's Terminal.app?
Got the paste (command-v) hack in, and it works great, just trying to
figure out how to get Option and Delete working as well.
All will be well then. . .

This all works in Apple's Terminal Program. . .
Still trying to learn X.

Friends,
Control-H has always meant Help in Emacs.
Similarly, Control-S means search and
Control-Q means Quote-Next. (These latter
make the XON-XOFF protocol even worse than
it was already, for old systems that use it.)
All Emacs keys can be remapped, that's part of
its beauty. However, in this case, try typing
the DELETE key instead of backspace (Control-H).
Holding down Control while hitting the key will
typically reverse its meaning.
My Mac keyboard does not have a BACKSPACE key
on it at all, but I'm in the U.S.
Good luck! Mark
ps. I prefer Option for Meta, rather than command.
