I've successfully installed both Apple's X11 User and SDK distributions
along with the OpenDarwin openMotif.mpkg and am able to run either X11.app
or XDarwin.app at my whim with no problems, save two.
First, the following soft link was missing:
/usr/X11/lib/libXm.3.dylib@ -> libXm.3.0.1.dylib
I guess this is a bug for the folks at OpenDarwin.org though. Fortunately,
it's easy to work around.
Second, when I run with XDarwin, mwm is kicked off at the end of my .xinitrc
and all of the custom configuration I have specified in ${HOME}/.mwmrc and
${HOME}/lib/app-defaults/Mwm are used, getting the environment to which I am
accustomed.
However, when I run with X11 and .xinitrc is still present, mwm is kicked
off at the end of my .xinitrc (everything else barfs because of path
problems which the XDarwin preferences alleviate). Rather than my custom
environment, I just get the defaults specified by
/usr/X11/lib/X11/app-defaults/Mwm and /usr/X11/lib/X11/system.mwmrc.
Is there something different being run or sources with XDarwin that isn't
with X11? In either case, it's the identical 'mwm' being run.
Finally, not really a problem, but a feature gap relative to other X11
servers (Irix, HP-UX, Solaris, etc.). At present, there's no support for
PseudoColor visuals, any idea what the limitation is or what's involved in
getting it working? I'd be happy to help where possible.
Despite a few crashes here and there relative to XDarwin.app, it seems well
on it's way to being a solid and high-performance X11 server.
Also, while it compiles, I have yet to get AnimaBob's
<http://www.borg.umn.edu/~grant/AnimaBob/> GLX visuals to work on either OS
X w/ X11.app or Xdarwin.app, even though they work on Irix, Solaris and
Linux from the same code base. I suspect this may be a bug with AnimaBob
though.
Thanks for making Mac OS X the best operating system I've had the privilege
to use in 20+ years!
Regards,
Grant Erickson
