Quoting Haroon Sheikh just now:
A FAQ is available here :
http://lists.apple.com/mhonarc/x11-users/msg00088.html
The Archives can be found here (until we get this hooked up
from the main x11-users page) :
http://lists.apple.com/mhonarc/x11-users/index.html
I'm hoping this ends up both on the list's web page as well as the message
List-* headers, but in the meantime "where is the faq" seems to be the
most f. a. of q.'s :)

As a rule of thumb, for any version of Unix (including MacOS X, Linux,
BSD, etc), "dotfiles" like this live in your home directory. So if your
home directory is /Users/summers, then /Users/summers/.xinitc should be
the full path to your .xinitrc, but ~/.xinitrc (with the tilde) should be
a portable shortcut on any platform.
Steven Burr already posted a specific answer that should meet your needs,
but hopefully this more broad answer is also helpful in the long run.
