the xterm is really not very useful.
1) macintosh copy & paste doesnt work (standard terminal is much
better
in this respect) so if you are used to use cmd-c / cmd-v be happy that
you can now retype everything manualy now :-(.

Copy and paste in xterm work in exactly the way they are supposed to do in X apps, and text copied in an xterm window can be pasted in native apps with cmd-v (see the FAQ for more details).

But this is not standard X, this is Aqua and it will be used by Macintosh users who have never used X before. Having a menu saying "Paste" which is not active is VERY confusing.

As far as the FAQ goes, there are NONE. Or at least I was not able to
find them as many others seem.

2) trying to set the keyboard (which is US by default, even macOS X is
set to swiss german) results in a bus error:

bash-2.05a$ setxkbmap -layout ch_DE
Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property
Use defaults: rules - 'xfree86' model - 'pc101' layout - 'us'
Bus error
bash-2.05a$

True, but the FAQ mentions an easy workaround that works
with most international keyboards. It is also possible to solve
this problem by writing an appropriate .xmodmap file and
adding "xmodmap ~/.xmodmap" in your .xinitrc file
(see numerous posts in this list; I'm using a Spanish .xmodmap myself).

There's no archive or FAQ to search so how should I find this?

The FAQ appeared in Vol. 1 #16, message 4, of the digests. It has also been posted in macosxhints.com's UNIX forum:

http://forums.macosxhints.com/ showthread.php?s=9ac2cb4542d4c509aa23ef682e980bff&threadid=8446&highligh t=x11+faq

Similar workarounds for the keyboard mapping problems have been posted by many users in this list.

So basically no non-US guy can use this software.
Not really Apple like. What's wrong here?

I for one have a Spanish ISO keyboard, and I'm using it with xterm without any problems whatsoever. IMHO, X11 has glitches, but it's far from unusable, even for users with international keyboards.

Well if you are used to swiss german keyboard and you have to type in US keyboard, I can tell you it is definitively unusable as often used items like | or ~ or / or & can not be found anymore. A simple preferences settings, is what one would expect from a Apple software. Otherwhise we could simply remove aqua and run X directly. The whole goal to bring X on to the MacOS X is to give MacOS users the power of X applications while retaining the ease of use of MacOS. otherwise they should buy a Linux box or a Sun.

I agree with you that X11 is not a polished product, and that the keyboard
issue should be solved in the final release in a more user friendly way. However,
the problem is easily fixed by one of the workarounds mentioned in this
list, and to call X11 "unusable" for users with international keyboards is IMHO
unfair.
