Just to put another nail in their coffin, the zombie state is entered
when the process has exited and cleaned up all state except for its
exit status. The zombie state lets that persist (recorded in the proc
structure) until its parent (or grandparent) asks after it (with
'wait(2)'). Therefore, you won't find a live zombie (i.e., they won't
slip under your radar and surprise you) [modulo the odd kernel bug, of
course...]
The whole dialogue went so comical and I couldn't help giggling.
