Seeing that Apple's X11 revives all the bugs that were eliminated in
XDarwin during the last year or so, I looked through my old bug reports
to XDarwin and found one that had cost me already many hours at that
time: When the display was set to 1000s of colors instead of millions,
the X server crashed in some 3D graphics routines.
One of my machines has systematic Xquartz crashes when OpenGL routines
are called. I checked and to my surprise found that its display was
indeed set to 1000s of colors. I am sure that I did not set this, it
must have changed by itself. Setting it to millions of colors indeed
fixed the problem.
So if you have mysterious crashes in 3D graphics routines, check that
your display preferences are set to millions of colors. Don't believe
your eyes or your memory, check the preferences. The Xquartz. crash.log
shows something like the follwing:
Thread 1 Crashed:
#0 0x000b407c in fbBlt
#1 0x000bcc7c in fbCopyWindowProc
#2 0x000ae070 in RootlessCopyWindow
etc.
There were several messages to this list giving this kind of crash log.
Another bug that would not have been necessary, sigh.
