The switch to X11 for fink wasn't entirely seamless for me.
try this (from the fink.sourceforge.net page):
1. update fink:
% fink selfupdate-cvs
2. update/install the system-xfree86 package
% fink install system-xfree86
step 2 didn't actualy work for me, so I tried:
% sudo apt-get install system-xfree86
and got the list of packages that needed to be updated, did a 'fink
update <package>, and then ran apt-get again.
