After installing the Apple X11 and SDK, plus system-xfree86 from fink, I then installed gv from fink.

When I run it on a postscript file, the gv display comes up immediately, but immediately also an error window pops up with a message

Unknown device: x11alpha

Where's your ghostscript from? There are versions of ghostscript out there that are compiled without X11 support. Type "gs -help" and look at the list of devices. With ghostscript installed from fink, this list starts with

x11 bbox x11alpha x11cmyk

etc.
