This must be sooo simple that it's not documented anywhere, so please forgive a silly question.

How do I get scroll bars on my xterm?

Call xterm with command line options, for example

xterm -ls -rightbar -sb -sl 2000

opens an xterm running a login shell (therefore the environment variables are correct), has a scrollbar on the right and keeps a scroll history of 2000 lines. See "man xterm" for details and other options.
