I solved my problem. For reasons I won't get into, I had changed my $HOME variable to a subdirectory in my .login file; something like:

sentenv HOME $HOME/x/y

Commenting out the change fixed the problem. But why?

I vaguely recall an answer to this question earlier on, but I've deleted most of my mail due to the high traffic, so my apologies if I'm being repetitive.

When I run an application (xv for example) from the "Applications" menu of X11 it works fine. When I run it from an xterm window I get the message

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

/usr/local/bin/xv: Can't open display

What's wrong?
