You are right, and I'm sorry for giving misinformation. The M$ mouse
panel DOES let you specify option-click as the action. If you select
"click", a second dialogue box allows you to specify modifiers.

This works best for me too. I didn't have the problem that "it slowed
the mouse to a crawl". It did seem to cause X11 to hang sometimes, and
this may have been extreme sluggishness rather than an outright crash,
but I've seen such hangs occasionally anyway, so it could be a
coincidence.
