Hi, I'm a longtime user of X's capabilities on other machines, but I am
not a power user, so if this sounds obvious, please understand that for
me it isn't immediately obvious. I need to connect to machines at
school which run a package by cadence for designing ICs. The problem
is that the program doesn't just need 8 bit color or better, it needs 8
bit color EXACTLY; if you have greater resources, it chokes with the
following error:
*WARNING* Atr: Failed to find 8-plane PseudoColor visual
which leaves me with the great annoyance of having to go to full screen
mode, and switch back an forth nonstop. I can do this (I am doing
this) but it annoys me to have to do so. I was hoping that at some
point in the future some kindly soul would be willing to do something
to X11 to make this work, and work well.
Thanks,
Cem Karan
Hi Cem,
Two points of note:
Typically, all servers at all depths support PseudoColor visuals, but
Cadence needs exactly 8 bit planes. This can be accomplished three ways:
either start the server with the -bpp switch, change your X config file so
that 8 bit planes is your default setting, or run a standard server then
connect to it with a client that has fewer planes available. For details
on some of these options, see http://www.fysik.dtu.dk/CAMP/xlinux.html and
the xfree86.org docs.
Second, the new release of Cadence no longer requires exactly 8 bit planes.
Just in the past couple of months they "moved" into the 21st century and 24
bit planes does not bother the toolset any longer. Encourage your school
to consider upgrading.
Best,
Joe Kiniry
