I agree with Steve, install system-xfree86. What you do after that
(xfig, NEdit, gimp, etc.
should work). The important thing is that there are several
system-xxxxxx packages, which
really mean "I have already installed package xxxxxxl, so use that
installation".
If you want recommendations on which fink packages you might like, you
will generate
a boat-load of responses.

fink apps that use X to detect your Apple X11 install and use that.

you'll get a slew of requirements with them to round out your system.
