forking to a nonexistent process terminates xterm

There seems to be a problem when you try to fork a process whose command is non-existent. For example: I tried running "ddd &" after installing X11, but it killed the xterm session rather then just producing an error message.
This seems to be a bug. I've never had this problem with any other flavor of UNIX. It's not uncommon to try to run a process that isn't in your path or to merely misspell the program name.
FYI: I just downloaded the X11 software today (v0.1 [XFree86 v4.2.1]). My OS version is 10.2.3.
