Preserving tcsh history between X11 xterms and Terminal.app

Hi, folks,

As a tcsh user (and yes, I know that bash builds character ;) ), I've
found something rather annoying with Apple's X11 beta. I live by my
command history (to save time and keystrokes). When I start up X11
using Apple's X11.app, my history gets nuked (I can't access any of my
history entries, and ".tcsh_history" is reset to a 0-byte file when I
exit any xterm), even though "echo $SHELL" informs me that my shell is,
indeed, tcsh. Fortunately, if I open a Terminal window before starting
X11, and keep it open until I shut down X11, I can restore my command
history.

Interestingly, this doesn't happen when I start X by typing "startx"
from a prompt in Terminal.app (and it never happened with my previous
Xfree86 installation, courtesy of Fink). Something weird is going on
with regard to the way in which X11.app processes (or fails to process)
my configuration files. My local .cshrc clearly isn't being read, since
my locally-defined aliases aren't available until I re-source the file,
but neither is /usr/share/tcsh/examples/rc (or any of the other general
config files in that directory, I would imagine). Obviously,
Terminal.app isn't subject to this sort of behavior.

I'm using the Apple-supplied defaults for X11, and I've temporarily
disabled my old .xinitrc in case it was causing the problem (apparently
not, since it's still there).

I find this rather strange. Has anyone figured out a way around this,
or is this known behavior (to be fixed in the final version, I hope)
that's worthy of a bug report?

If there's no (known or planned) cure, I may just nuke my Apple X11
install and renew my acquaintance with Fink. In cleaning up, do I need
to do anything besides nuking X11.app and the contents of /usr/X11R6
and /etc/X11?

Thanks,

Mike
