Personal aesthetic preferences, mostly. xterm looks generally ugly to me, and I haven't found any X fonts that I like as well as 9 pt Monaco or ProFont. (Suggestions of good X fonts are welcome, though; I still work a lot on Linux boxes.) Terminal.app in 10.2 seems to have messed up font spacing, though.

While profont is nice for programming, I find the letter shapes to be a little hard on the eye.

The linux font project (http://dreamer.nitro.dk/linux/lfp/index.html)
has produced a set of very nice fixed width fonts. Most are at very
small point sizes, so they're not so good at 1600x1200 on a 17" CRT,
but do work wonderfully on the LCD of my tiBook, and make effective
use of the (sometimes slightly cramped) screen real estate.

Specifically, Smooth is a good font for use in xterms.

Toby.
