Hm. ssh has nothing to do with GTK. Could you give a detailed description
of what actions you took, where you typed ssh, etc.? That would help us
understand how you are trying to run.

You don't want to use xdmcp.

No, you definitely don't need to do that. All you have to do is launch
Apple's X11.app application. In the Applications folder, just double-click
the "X11" icon. That's the equivalent of "startx" in Linux.
Once you have that going, you should have an "xterm" on your screen which
is running on your OS X box. In that window, type
"ssh -x whatever.your.vaios.name.is". You will be logged into your Linux
box. You can then run any X11 client you wish. A good test would be
typing "xterm" and see if another xterm shows up.

You'll have to go to fink for that one. I suppose you could run it from
your VAIO, but that's really a heck of a lot of network traffic to run a
window manager from a network-attached box.
