The reason it seems backward to many people is that most servers are
generally "out there" somewhere.  File servers, mail servers, etc.  Any
place that it not their local box.  Their local box runs a client that
connects to those servers.

On the other hand, an X server provides graphics capabilities of the local
box.  And the clients which use that X server's services can often times
run somewhere else.

While it's still consistent with the definition of "server" and "client",
X11 breaks people's concept of where they expect the client and server
processes to be.
