Have you tried
DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

I'm having a difficulty with Apple X11, which was not an issue

If I have X11 running with my Powerbook running standalone, and then
connect it to a DHCP server, I can no longer open new xwindows
unless I quit and restart X11. I get an error message:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0.0
The same thing happens if I start up X11 while connected to the
DHCP server and then disconnect from the network.
It seems to have to do with the change in machine name inflicted
by the DHCP server (I note that my $HOST is some long complicated
thing assigned by the DHCP server, which changes with each connect --
e.g. right now it is:
echo $HOST
apple-0-3-93-7a-e4-9a.dhcp.lbl.gov
and dthe machine name, which shows up in the system prompt,
is apple-0-3-93-7a-e4-9a; whereas when I open X11 stand-alone
I get a prompt related to the Sharing Prefs.s Computer Name.
XDarwin does not have this problem; with XDarwin, windows continue
to open if I connect or disconnect the network, but the machine
name identified in the prompt will change when a new window is
launched.
Is there a fix? It is a nuisance to have to restart X11 each time,
especially given the X11 zombie problem (all those dead processes
labelled "(X11)").
