8 bit color modes in Mac OS X are not recommended. This minimum system
requirement is thousands of color. X11 for Mac OS X Beta currently only
supports rootless operation where 8 bit pseudocolor visuals are
unsupported. I don't expect us to support 8 bit pseudocolor in rootless
mode. However, if and when we implement full screen mode (a common
request), we could look at enabling 8 bit visuals there.
If you want to use your application with X11 for Mac OS X and you can
re-write it, I'd recommend that first.

The available visuals on my Mac running apple X11 are 24 bit TrueColor

But I have an application that insists on an 8 bit PseudoColor visual
(read/write colorcells). So it won't start.
This program runs on HP, Sun and SGI but can't get the visual it wants
on a
Mac or Intel machine.
Do I have to rewrite the application?
Is there an easy way around this.
