hi again, William. OK, I found the page I was looking for. THe process is described in good detail here:

However, I originally had ssh x11 forwarding working simply by setting
ForwardX11 to 'yes' in both /etc/ssh_config and
/etc/sshd_config. These files are the config files for the ssh client
and daemon respectively.

I'd be curious to know what all the other options on the aformentioned
web page do, and which (if any) are strictly necessary for XForwarding
to work. Anyone?
