xterm has a lot of configurability, the same on OSX as other unixes.
As your other respondent said, check the man pages. But briefly
if you invoke xterm as xterm -sb -sl 1000, for example, you will
open up an xterm with a scroll bar and 1000 lines of saved history.
In contrast to a terminal, however, this scroll bar will be an X11-style
scroll bar (by default on the left, and draggable with the middle mouse
button on a 3-button mouse, or via option+mouse with a single button
mouse in 3-button emulation mode).
