has anyone successfully used OroborusX
(http://oroborosx.sourceforge.net/) with Apple's X11 distro? I could
not get Oroborus to launch because it depens on XDarwin, the XFree86
MacOS app for launching their X11 implementation.
Yes, OroborOSX can be made to work (to varying degrees) with Apple's X11.
However, the complexity of getting it to work depends on exactly what
you mean by 'work with'...
The first (and simplest) case is to get OroborOSX to launch, along with
its own built-in XDarwin X server, but within Apple's installation of
X11.
This just uses the X11 libs from Apple's distro, so there's little to be
gained compared to using standard XDarwin, except flexibility at being
able to run two (or more!) X servers at once :-)
You can find instructions to do this in the OroborOSX help forum:
http://oroborosx.sf.net/forums.html
The second (more complicated) case is to fool OroborOSX into thinking
Apple's X11.app is XDarwin.app. This involves fiddling with the
internals of X11.app, changing filenames and the Info.plist file.
The benefit of this is that you are using Apple's X11 server (rather
than the built-in XDarwin X server), which is considerably faster. It
does give some features over quartz-wm (window grouping, better window
placement on multiple screens, windowshade, etc). However, you lose out
on some of the features compared to using it with its built-in XDarwin
(eg, min-to-dock, translucency, interleaving).
Hope that helps!
Adrian
