I still haven't seen you say whether the bug remains if you run xemacs
without using X, i.e.:
xemacs -nw
This would help a lot in determining whether it is the X interface code
that is the problem, or something more fundamental in emacs itself.
Have you tried moving your .emacs aside and seeing whether that has any
effect?
