Keith,
I think the person asking about emacs and X11 has a different problem.
I have problems with opening xterms or even just switching focus from
xterms that are already open when I change my computer's Internet
connection. I use Apple's X11 server and the quartz-wm.
I finally figured out that it worked much better if I started X11 with
my computer disconnected from the Internet so that the "hostname" is
"Eric-Fieldings-Titanium.local." The X11 security system uses the
"hostname" to check whether new clients like "xterm" should be allowed,
and "quartz-wm" also seems to be affected. If the hostname changes, then
you won't be able to start new clients, and I found in som cases I
couldn't change focus or that quartz-wm would completely crash.
The trick is to keep the same hostname. When I connect to a network and
Mac OS X system changes the IP address, it seems to keep the same
hostname until you either reboot or put the computer into sleep. If you
wake the computer up already connected to a new network it may get its
hostname from the network. My solution was to wake the computer up
before connecting it to the network. Maybe you can do something similar
with VPN connections.
Cheers,
++Eric

I have had this happen if I change a connection while X11 is running. I
usually start up VPN before I launch X11. If I shut down VPN (disconnect)
while X11 is running, new xterm windows refuse to open until I log out and
back in.
