I don't see this. To me, Macs have fewer customizations available

world for a long time. I always wanted one, but couldn't quite
justify it until it was clear that OS X was going to be Unix based
(and was really oing to be delivered.)
Unix with X Windows is the OS for the ultimate customizer.

You missed all the pHun then from System 7 to 9. Mac's not
customizable? Mac OS System 9 was the best, you could have it looking
like what ever you want and there are millions of little shareware
apps and Finder extensions. Yeah ok, I rebooted a lot, did lots of
extension conflict tests, moving extensions in and out of my system,
but I new what every single file in my system did. See, because it was
so much fun, I learnt a hell of a lot.
Ok, I stand corrected. I did start back with OS 9, but I didn't add
any third-party products. I bought my kids an iMac about two and a
half years ago, and did all of the installations and customizations on
it. I didn't want to add third-party apps because I didn't want to
degrade stability. Besides trying to get the system where it was easy
for my four year old to play here games, I also got deep into it
because I wanted to switch my machine. I wasn't willing to switch
however, due to OS 9 to due to the stability issues.
I upgraded the iMac to 10.1.2. After running it for a while, I bought
my iBook. It was great having it at work with the glowing apple on the
back. That and the white color attracted a lot of attention. As of
when I left, nobody else had switch yet, but there were several people
considering it.
So, I was comparing "out of the box" versions of OS 9 and Unix. I
wasn't considering the other sides of it. However, from your
description, I believe that most pre-OS X Mac users who did the
customizations will end up loving OS X after they get over the shock of
finding that they are on a different continent and they don't know
where the cities are, much less where trails begin or lead.
Mac OS X is just coming of age, hopefully by 10.5 its gonna be back to
what it should be.
Agreed. I didn't see 10.0, but the progress from 10.1 to 10.2 bodes
well for 10.5 being what it should be.
It looks like they've come a long way on X11, but they will need it
integrated in more seamlessly with Aqua before it will be where it
should be. The common user shouldn't be able to feel a difference
between a native X11 app and a native Aqua one. I don't know why OS X
wasn't initially built on X windows natively. I'm sure there were some
major battles with Apple about it. I'm glad they are working hard at
reducing the gap.
randy.
