Ummm... Nope, I sure didn't. :) I installed Fink and everything else
as root, so I had to change the permissions in order to write to it. I
just assumed it was something in the .xinitrc file. Thanks for the
hint.
On the other hand, KDE seems to crash continually while being run from
X11. I am running the 3.1 beta compiled from source using Fink. Have
you or anyone else had better experience with it? Minimizing a window
crashes it every time. It would be fun to be able to use sometimes,
although I prefer a "lighter" WM.
Thanks again,
JAW

Hi All -
I have been trying to get KDE up and running just for fun, and have
been able to build it from source and install using fink (install
bundle-kde-ssl). This seems to go fine, but when I include the
appropriate lines in the .xinitrc file, nothing seems to happen.
source /sw/bin/init.sh
/sw/bin/startkde >/sw/var/log/kde.log 2>&1
It just sits there with the X cursor, X11 doesn't quit. If I add
lines to create windows they have no handles, etc. since there is no
window manager. I have been able to use one of these windows to
verify the installation by manually executing the "startkde" script.
This works - although it usually crashed eventually :) . I can't
understand why this would work in a shell but not in the .xinitrc >
file.
Do you have write permission to /sw/var/log to create the log file?
randy.
