I see the same thing, and the * (shift-8) also doesn't work on my
powerbook. It's forward select in kwrite. The interesting thing is I
get the same behavior in konsole windows which are started as a part of
restoring a saved session, but a konsole opened from a command line, or
even from the kicker, doesn't have this problem.

I have one other user verifying this potential bug:
I currently have KDE 3.1-1 and running in Apples X11 User 0.2beta and
for some reason in Kate (and other KDE apps), I can't use the + key
(shift =/+). Instead of a plus I get the text selected backwords. Try
programming without the + key :[
Can any body else with with KDE / X11 User please verify if theirs does
the same.
