Hello all,
I noticed a prior post about xterms appearing and disappearing in the
'blink on an eye' - I have/had the same problem. Restarting solved the
problem momentarily, however the problem came back. I removed an xhost
+ command from my .cshrc file and that seems to have solved the issue
as well. I hope this is not the root of the problem though - not being
able to remotely display would be bad.
Hi sean. I reported the xterm problem. I have not seen it come back
since my reboot, but neither have i tried to reproduce it.
hm... correction. I just used x 3 minutes ago (launched it) and quit
it. I just re-launched it, and the blinks are back.
Sorry, Apple, looks like there's a new bug here. top confirms that
everything is running, but the only xterm listing I can find is:
root 1257 0.0 0.0 0 0 con- Z 31Dec69 0:00.00
(xterm)
I do _not have any xhost or any other such stuff; I'm using straight
ssh tunnelling.
oh. I get it. I think I know how to reproduce this. Here is what I've
done both times:
1. I try to launch an x11 app in terminal. BUT, x11 is not currently
running, and I get some sort of error.
2. I launch x11. xterm pops up, and all seems to work well.
3. I quit x11 using the new keyboard shorcut, and hit return at the
warning.
4. I re-launch x11. It doesn't launch xterms any more (flicker effect)
remote xterms continue to work, as do local and remote apps (gnuplot,
emacs)
I did note that after I tried a remote xterm, something interesting
happened. I tried to launch a local xterm. first, the command returned
immediately. That is:
[:~] markian% xterm
[:~] markian%
no xterm displayed or flickered.
When I issued the command again:
[:~] markian% xterm
this time, an xterm appeared, and the command waited for exit.
I'm now back to flickering, but it's probably important to note that
[:~] markian% xterm
[:~] markian%
is what happens, ie, xterm exits immediately on the command-line.
something is causing the xterm to exit.
This is a huge pain. I can't keep rebooting every time this happens!
My primary concern at the moment, however, is the interaction of
xemacs and X11 0.3. Namely, I get a whole host of display related
errors and only the xemacs window pops up - no text inside. Has anyone
else experienced this problem? I have just finished re-installing fink
and am in the process of re-installing xemacs to see if that clears up
the problem. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome.
I haven't had any problems, but I run x-emacs remotely off a variety of
other boxes.
Markian
