If anyone at Apple is testing internally a XFree86 4.3.0 based
X11 beta, they might want to try the molmol program (which is GL based).
If you have fink installed you can build it by following the
instructions at...
http://chemistry.ucsc.edu/~wgscott/xtal/molmol/molmol_on_fink.html
Once installed, if you run molmol and select the plot tiff menu command
you will find that the resulting tiff is incorrectly created. The
tiff will be almost all black with a narrow image of color on the left
hand side.
I bring this up because on ppclinux we also had problems with
creating plots in molmol under XFree86 4.2.x but it was a slightly
different problem. In the case of ppclinux, the plot command would
fail outright with an error about no 24-bit TrueColor visual being
available. Fortunately, the new XFree86 4.3.0 release eliminates
this problem on ppclinux and now proper tiff and png plots can be
generated from in molmol.
It would be interesting to know if the problems we have with
incorrect plots being generated from molmol under the current
X11 beta3 are eliminated when the XFree86 4.3 code base is used
instead. Thanks in advance for someone at Apple looking at this
bug.
Jack
