I understand why you might think that, but if that was the case,
would we see the flicker of the xterm window creation?
because xterm creates the window before using the pty?
I see.
Also, I should have _plenty of pseudo terminals free.
sure, it's not a question of whether you have ptys free, but whether
the xterm process can access them with their current ownership and
permissions
OK, that makes sense.. That's why remote xterms display... they don't
use _my ptys.
Is there any way I can watch the allocation of pseudo-terminals to
confirm this? like, some kind of top -pty -s .25?? :)
um... can anyone tell me what to do with it? :) :) (ie, how do I
recompile xterm and apply the patch?)
download the X11 source, cd into the "xc" directory, run "patch
programs/xterm/main.c <xterm-patch-0", then follow the instructions to
compile everything (but don't install it). Then try running
programs/xterm/xterm
I presume some of these paths will become obvious once I download
everything. eg, where are the "xc" and "programs" directories?
But my real next question is where do I download the X11 source? or do
you mean the devtools? Or did you mean the xterm source? But at any
rate, same question all around. Sorry if I'm being obtuse!
Thanks,
Markian
