Early on, I used the Fink version of X11 and was rather happy with it.
When Apple came out with their own version of X11 I moved to that
because I felt it would be better supported and it seemed faster to me.
In general, I have been very happy with it. I only have one minor
issue with it, which I wish Apple would address at some point.
When Apple's X11 was first introduced I suggested that I would like to
be able configure what modifier keys to use when emulating a 3 button
mouse. I believe I was told that it was being looked into for the
future. What I was really alluding to was the following, and I
probably should have been more specific.
In the Fink installed version of X11 I was able to configure the Option
key along with the mouse button as the Right most mouse button (button
3) and I was able to configure the Option and Command keys together
along with the mouse button as the middle mouse button (button 2). The
advantage of this was that I avoided using the Control key or the
Command key alone as a modifier. Not using the Control key as a
modifier for the mouse has obvious advantages. Not using the Command
key as a modifier for the mouse has the advantage that keyboard
shortcuts such as Command-C can still be used in order to Copy X11 text
into the MacOS X application space. It worked really well! Much
better than the current Apple X11 method of not having a Right mouse
button at all or having to select Copy from the menu every time.
(Also, the advantage of using Option for the Right button instead of
the middle one is simply that most X11 programs use the left and right
buttons more than they do the middle.)
I would love to have this kind of configurability in Apple's X11. Is
there a chance?
Thanks for a great program and wonderful OS so far, by the way! You
people are doing a great job!
