Because they are different characters! What disadvantages?
Why don't we limit people TO ALL CAPS IF WE ARE NOT GOING TO
DISTINGUISH BETWEEN
THE CHARACTERS?
This is getting silly. A lot of people have debated this issue over a
very long time, and while there are some of us who are used to
case-sensitive file systems, the vast (I do mean *vast*) majority of
users are not.
You can check the archives mentioned in several replies to this thread
for all the discussion you want. Let's please not waste time on a dead
issue. HFS+ is HFS+. It's not going to change. Apple provides UFS
for those that want or need it.
