But that's my point, they should not do that. Apple's X server and
XonX are both 'X11'. The only reason Apple call their bundle
'X11.app' is because it is an X11 server, not because they wanted to
call their product 'X11'.
But the fact remains that the product/application *is* called
X11.app, and just like people don't talk about iTunes.app but about
iTunes, people talk about X11 instead of about X11.app.
you all seem to have a large amount of time available that you can
talk hours about this completely irrelevant stuff :)
I don't have much time available, so I don't want to spend time trying
to decipher what someone means by "X11" ( or even "X"). As a courtesy
to others, and to keep me from having to read responses where people
haven't understood what I meant, I use "X11.app" for Apple's X server,
"quartz-wm" for Apple's window manager, and OS X for Apple's Mac OS.
This is similar to using parentheses in code to keep people from having
to decipher what is happening based on orders of precedence. Most of
the time the person reading the code would arrive at the correct
interpretation without the parentheses, but it slows them down and
leaves more room for misinterpretation.
Being explicit about the context is also similar to quoting previous
posts to preserve context. It isn't technically required, but more
people will read the mail and understand it correctly if you do include
the quote.
I'm sure many others here read mailing list like I do: they scan the
emails quickly to see if they need to look at it in detail. When
scanning quickly, one doesn't always catch the full context. I'd
rather those who scan quickly be able to understand my post so I get
the best responses. Of course, those scanning quickly will probably
not get to this point of my email <grin>.
