Hi. A number of you have responded to my questions, so I'm going to try
consolidate and answer it all here.
Let me start by saying that after installing fink, I did the following:
I added a .cshrc to /pribate/var/root containing:
setenv PATH "${PATH}:/sbin:"
source /sw/bin/init.csh
I added to my own .cshrc:
#for fink and lyx
source /sw/bin/init.csh
And I did the sudo fink update-packages thingy
Next, I installed and ran fink commander. I wanted to install
system-sfree86 and xemacs.
When I installed system-xfree86, I got:
Reading Package Lists...
Building Dependency Tree...
The following NEW packages will be installed:
system-xfree86
0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not
upgraded.
Need to get 0B/2836B of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
Now, tim says that I should see a progress meter. I didn't see
anything... But, the package info says that system-xfree86 is merely a
placeholder...? BTW, I clicked on the option to install a binary, which
I gather is the same as apt-get on the CLI.
Thus, my new questions here are: How do I determine if system-xfree86
is really installed?
Second, I tried x-emacs. I could not get it to work in fink
commander... it claimed that update-rc.d is not in my path. but, typing
"which update-rc.d" for either myself or root reveals it to be in
/sw/sbin.
Tim points out that debian would be expecting it to be in /usr/sbin on
Debian systems. That may be so, but I know other people here have used
fink to install xemacs. Surely some have used fink commander...?! Tim
and others further point out that I should place
source /sw/bin/init.csh
into my .cshrc. As you see above, I don't it to my cshrc and root's. So
this can't be the problem. though, did I put it in the right place in
the case of root? (see above) But I must have, because the install of
xemacs worked on the command-line.
I hear what you're saying about using graphical package manager, Tim,
but I was under the impression that Commander worked rather well...
Again, don't others use it??
So, I guess my final questions are:
-How do I find out what's installed?
-Does the setup I've described look correct; especially did I create
root's .cshrc in the correct place? where is the system default cshrc?
-Can someone please point me to a way to make fink commander work? If
my problem is with Commander, I guess I'm trying to figure out who to
email to resolve this.
Thanks,
Markian
