I've been using a separate partition for /sw ever since fink was out.
A nice thing about it is I only need to upgrade the fink installation on
one machine and then I can create a disk image from it and uss it
to update all other fink installation on other macs without
going through the long process of recompiling.

From my experience, most Macintosh beginners don't mind at all that
Fink
installs everything in /sw.
Can you not simply ln -s elsewhere?
In principle you can install Fink anywhere you like. Read:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/bundled/install-first.php
Also, after installation you can move it to a different location.
Please, read at my web page: "To move the /sw tree to a different
location"
