Thanks much for the suggestions! I solved it by removing the .xinitrc
directory (renaming it of course).
Since it was completely empty, I did not think that it was needed and
after renaming it, X11 started and behaved normally. Was not sure how
to put in quartz-vm so I tried ignoring it and it now seems to be back
to what it was doing before. Thanks again!!

Does the quartz-vm run? If you have a ~/.xinitrc, make sure quartz-vm
is in it.
If you install programs it might be so that those overrides the
quartz-wm/.xinitrc (how depends on program), which introduces troubles
if the X11 server is launched afterwards - or if the installed program
for some reason kills the window manager and starts its own, which
fails.
If I haven't made myself clear, please ask and I'll elaborate. :-)
