Hello,
I have a little problem with X11.app _3 that I'm hoping the list can
help me with. (I've read the entry about this in the FAQ.)
I have a Tibook 10.2.6 connected to the Net via Ethernet and I get IP
and hostname etc. via DHCP. Since I quite commonly disconnects from
the net (that's the whole point with a laptop, isn't it? ;-) ) my
hostname varies between Neocortex.local and <very long, cryptic string
that might change between times, given by the DHCP server>.bredband.net.
Since I at times also quits the X11 application and it differs which
hostname I have each time I restarts it, the authorisation (sp?)
server in X11 can get confused about what's its name is. I.e. I can
get problems open X11 windows, like Emacs och xterm, since the program
is not allowed to connect to the server.
These problems hasn't occured for a while - maybe I'm just lucky - but
I can't open Openoffice.org with the Start Openoffice.org
application. This is most annoying. I get the following errormessage
in the /tmp/Start_<long cryptic string> file (which is written by
/Applications/Opensource/Start Openoffice.org v1.0b7/Start
OpenOffice.org.app):
/Applications/Opensource/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/program/soffice.bin:
cannot open display "localhost:0"
Please check your "DISPLAY" environment variable
as well as the permissions to access that display.
(See "man X" resp. "man xhost" for details)
I really don't want to do a "xhost +", and my experiments with xauth
has failed.
Is there a recommended way of getting rid of this problem? How to make
the X11 server accept all connections from my own computer, from
programs I run myself - regardless of what the hostname currently is?
The reason I disbelieve the xhost program is that I also want some
kind of security - I use OS X' firewall and I think my ISP has
firewalls too (but I'm most uncertain about that) - and I don't know
how secure the xhost program is in this context. Maybe "xhost <my
username>" is sufficent?
Neither "Authenticate connections" nor "Allow connections from network
clients" is checked in the preferences for X11.
Any help appreciated.
