Before I could try deleting the .X11-unix file I reloaded 10.2.6 and
that fixed whatever I had done! It is all working again.

The /tmp/.X0-lock file in particular will prevent X from starting.
For some reason, Apples window manager doesn't cleanup
when closed (like most systems). You need to close each
client, before quiting.
