I don't know, Ben. I tried to use fink commander, but it totally failed
to work, while the command-line stuff suggested here worked fine. I
would still very much like to get commander working, but I don't know
what to try next. I think I'm hardly a 'newbie', as I've been using
windows and X for around a decade now. Granted, I've used it as a
_user. Which is why I want commander to work, instead of the command
line. It's bad enough I've been debugging with gdb, since I couldn't
get my code to run in project builder. (it BUILDS fine, but it doesn't
RUN properly. very weird. but that's another thread.)

This I agree with, for the most part. I just have to remind myself that
fink != Macintosh. I appreciate fink's existence, and fink's cost. But
every time I use it (and I don't mean this in any way adversarially,
but only as a statement of fact) I'm reminded of just how good a job
apple does (single clicks and interfaces and all that). And no, it's
not just Fink. It's all sorts of things. Unix in general. I love Unix,
but I think the only reason Apple held my loyalty near the end of the
Dark Ages (or do we call them the Bad Times?) is because to switch to a
*nix would have been even more hassle.
ok, there we go. my $0.02
