Apple did not officially release any X11 software for Jaguar. Apple
did make some BETA software available to users. This was a plea by
Apple for folks to help them make sure that, when they did release some
software, it would work as well as it possibly could.
Anyone running that beta software took a risk. It's a testament to the
XFree86 community and the Apple engineers, that the BETA software
worked as well as it did. If that beta software just happened to work
for your needs then you were very fortunate!
X11 for Mac OS X had a successful beta program. Along the way Apple
learned where the problems were and made improvements to both the OS
and the X11 software to improve both.
When the software was ready they took down the beta software... just
like every other software beta program in the universe. Why is that so
surprising for everyone?
The improvements made to both the OS and X11.app strengthened the
symbiotic relationship between the two. As a result when apple finally
did RELEASE the software... the applications contains dependencies on
the changes to the OS. As a result, if you want to run X11 on the Mac
OS, (using the officially released software from Apple) then you will
have to adopt Panther.
To suggest that Apple should have put in more work to support X11.app
on Jaguar is ludicrous. Why not suggest that they put in the effort to
make the X11 software work with Mac OS 9.2.2 or System 6 for that
matter?
This is a normal software development cycle, not some manipulistic plot
to force people to upgrade to Panther. I'm surprised that so many
people were caught off guard by it.
