GIFs use the LZW algorithm to compress its data. LZW is patented by
Unisys, who has chosen to suck as much money out of it as possible. The
patent already expired in the U.S. earlier this year (June 23, 2003).
Other nations are not (yet) so fortunate and have to wait till 2004.
