I'm logged in as me and typing "xclock" in an xterm brings up the
clock. Now I
su - to another user name and type "xclock" and get
Error: Can't open display:
Oh, I say, DISPLAY isn't set. So I do a "setenv DISPLAY :0" and try
"xclock"
again and I get
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: :0
What's up? This works fine on my IRIX box.

IRIX is granting - wrongly - permissions to another user to run xclock
on your DISPLAY.
OS X does the right thing.
Do you have 'xhost +' - URGH - set on IRIX?
